The Underwater Photography Workshop

The Jim Church School of Underwater Photography is coming to the Laguna Beach Resort for a very special one week course, April 24-May 1, 2010. The Jim Church School is the oldest continually operating school, solely dedicated to teaching all elements of Underwater Photography.
Since 1975, thousands of students have either learned or enhanced their photo skills at the Jim Church School. This "hands-on" teaching tradition continues today through Jim’s close friends and associates Mike Mesgleski and Mike Haber. Like Jim, "Mike and Mike" are totally focused on their student’s photography. Their success comes from your success.
During the course, group presentations will be conducted each day, covering such subjects as: Digital Fundamentals, Metering, Lighting, Composition, Equipment Selection and Digital Post Production. In addition to group presentations, Mike and Mike will work with you one-on-one with your camera equipment. Underwater, they will help you set up shots, check composition, find subjects and even pose for you. From digital point & shoot cameras to housed digital SLR systems, Mike & Mike will help you get the shot. After a week of their instruction and help, you re sure to take home some great underwater photos and have a fun time doing it!
Regardless of your skill level, this course will make you a better Photographer.
Beginning Underwater Photographer If you are looking for instructors who can help you get started quick and easy? Mike & Mike are the most patient and understanding instructors you’ll ever meet. They’ll start you with their “this is the front of the camera” talk. They will simplify all the numbers and terms with easy to understand examples. This course is for you!

Digital Underwater Photographer Digital underwater photography introduces some new concepts to contend with. And, many principals of film based underwater photography also apply in the digital realm. Mike & Mike successfully merge these digital concepts with the traditional elements of underwater photography giving you all the information you need to develop your skills and shoot beautiful underwater photos.
Post Production Principals Archiving, Editing, Histograms, Color Space, White Balance... all new terms introduced to Underwater Photography via the digital age. And, we
now have a new camera accessory to incorporate, a computer. Mike & Mike bring it all together in full presentations and in small groups. They’ll show you how to edit, archive & present your work. They will demonstrate the following subjects using the most current versions of Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, Bridge and Apple Aperture. This includes:
• Color Correction • Cloning and Repairing • Color Management • Adjustment Layers • Sharpening • Dodging and Burning • Cropping • B&W Conversion
And most of all… it’s more fun than you can imagine! Great diving, a relaxed atmosphere and lots of fun, all combined with a comprehensive course in U/W photography. This is an enjoyable, learning vacation you can’t miss, and one you won’t forget for many years.
About the instructors Mike & Mike were Jim Church’s close friends and associates for 20 years. Jim had selected them to “team teach” his style of Underwater Photography instruction and they have been doing that successfully for 7 years aboard the Aggressor Fleet's live-aboard dive yachts. Between the two of them, Mike & Mike have been teaching Underwater Photography for more than 30 years, helping hundreds of students create beautiful images of our underwater world. They are both topside professional photographers in South Florida.
